The Redbourn Bypass
By Abi Samuels
The fight for a bypass in Redbourn to combat the relentless growth in car ownership and alleviate the severe traffic in the area was intense in the 1970s. While the initial proposal of the Hertfordshire County Council to widen the high street was unpopular, pressure intensified as a result of a terrible accident on Good Friday in 1971 in which four people were killed. The Bypass Committee was established in May 1978 and while there persisted many well publicised objections to individual arms of the bypass, resulting in a public enquiry held in February 1982, construction began in the summer of 1983 and was completed in time for the official opening ceremony held on the 24th October 1984.
