Unidentified Thatched Cottage, possibly in Hitchin or Baldock - Hertfordshire Archives & Local Studies

We’ve been unable to identify these three pictures of houses, except that the inscription on the photo of the thatched cottage suggests it may be in either Hitchin or Baldock.  Do you know any of them?  We’d be delighted to hear from you.

  • The bottom house is rooks nest. I can recognise the gate (bottom left) and the door and structure is the same

  • The thatched cottage could be the one in Norton, just off the corner?

  • I’d agree about Rooks Nest – the buildings are similar, but not exactly the same. The Workhouse looks to be an exact match, though.

  • There’s a drawing of the old workhouse (top picture) on this page:-http://www.hertsmemories.org.uk/page_id__6316.aspx?path=0p34p112p

There’s a picture of Rooks Nest at this page (see link) and the picture here does not look to be the same house. http://www.hertsmemories.org.uk/page_id__6124.aspx

  • The top house I believe is the old work house in matchmaker rd, stevenage.

  • Just discovered that the thatched cottage in the middle is Culverin Cottage in Weston, from the mid 17th century.

  • Not sure about the thatched cottages, but the top view is of 2 Letchmore Road Stevenage and the bottom one looks like Rooks Nest Farm, Walkern. Ironically the last thatched house in the town of Stevenage (just 100yd from 2 Letchmore Road) was demolished in the 1970s.
