Maidenhead Street, Hertford

Do you remember Fine Fare?

A busy Maidenhead Street

I like this view of a very congested Maidenhead Street in the 1960s – what a brilliant old pram!  I remember “Fine Fare” which closed down and turned into MacDonalds.  That in turn has gone too.

  • Before Fine Fare coming up from the Wash on the right was the Scotch Wool Shop, which is now a betting shop, Easifit Shoe Shop, next door was the baker, Bartons, then Stallybrass the butcher. There was a jeweller called Connells and a shoe shop called Blue Boot Store, which you had to go up a few steps to get to, then Drury Brothers, mens outfitters, which is now Homes and Gardens (formerly Slades), who used to be next to the Co-Op Chemist. This was all in the late 1940s and early 1950s.
