Apprentice indenture
Hitchin, 1673
By Llinos Thomas
Sometimes missing parish records turn up among estate papers, like the 1673 Hitchin apprentice indenture seen here, which was found in the Delmé-Radcliffe collection.
William Godfrey, alias Cooper, is to teach a poor child the ‘craft, mystery and occupation’ of a cordwainer (shoemaker). The names of six parish officers, with their original signatures, and two local Justices of the Peace, one with the wonderful name ‘Ozias’, are appended.
