Family at Ashridge
from Panshanger photograph album, 1860s
By Llinos Thomas
The landed gentry were quick to exploit the new fashion for photography. This image is from a photograph album given to Katrine Compton (later Countess Cowper) in 1866.
It shows that the Cowpers (of Panshanger) and the Egertons (of Ashridge) were part of the same social circle. This album and many others are wonderful to browse through – you might even find your ancestor!
