A few memories of the 1948 Olympics

By Stella

I went to the 1948 Olympics at Wembley stadium one Monday in August. I think it was a Bank Holiday as I did not have to go to work. I was able to go because the man I worked for had been secretary and treasurer of the Amateur Athletics Association and gave me some tickets he had available.

I sat in a seat quite near to the Olympic flame, which I always remember when it is mentioned in modern games. It has a special shape, like a palm tree or the frond on the top of a pineapple, but many times bigger. In a recent Olympic games, it was carried past Sele School on its way to the Olympic stadium.

Lots of famous athlets were taking part. I especially remember Macdonald Bailey, Arthur Wint and Donald Findley. Arthur Wint, a black sprinter ran like the wind, I had never seen anybody move so fast. Donald Findley was a hurdler. He went so fast that he seemed to have jumped over one hurdle before he had finished withthe previous one, with no breaks in between.
