Panshanger
The Moors
By Jennie Reed
It was very interesting to see the picture in the Welwyn Times showing The Moors, Panshanger in the 1960s. When my husband and I married we were unable to get a house in WGC (even though I had lived in Ayot St. Peter all my life). We would have loved to have bought a house on Panshanger but didn’t qualify because we were local. Eventually, the rules were relaxed and we bought 14 The Moors in 1966 (I think) and lived there until 1971.
Children could play outside safely on the grassy area and the little shop sold everything you needed including at one point, fresh meat. And there was a good bus service. Probably a lot better than many later housing estates.
I remember the girl on the right hand side but not her name. Most of the houses were bought by young people who moved on when their families grew or jobs took them elsewhere. We moved on because we wanted a bigger garden.
No. 14 was opposite the Mini van shown. We owned a Mini van at the time and are pretty sure that this was ours. (We can’t read the number plate but from old photos here ours ended in VKX).
I must get a calendar.
