Voices of World War II - the Home Guard

To mark VE Day, while under the restrictions imposed by the Covid-19 lockdown, Hertfordshire Archives & Local Studies have created a number of audio recordings, illustrating various aspects of the county’s contribution to the war and its response to victory in 1945.

Ernest Maurer was born in Sheffield and in his early 30s, he took a teaching post in Hemel Hempstead at Corner Hall Senior School.  These extracts are from letters to his fiancée in Sheffield, written in 1940, while he was serving in the Home Guard.
