In 1996 the Heritage Foundation published an A3 poster created from a detailed aerial picture of the town, taken during the summer.

The site allows you to zoom in and out of the picture, so that within a couple of clicks individual houses and gardens can be seen – just like Google Maps does today, but some years before Google was thought of!

The images also link to relevant pages in Andrew Millar’s web guided tour of the town, originally compiled at the same time.

The poster, and these images scanned from it, capture a remarkably detailed view of the town nearly two decades ago, when the cricket club still played at Muddy Lane, and tall fir tress dominated “Kennedy Gardens”…
