  • Thank you Geoff for the interesting information. We knew very little about Jessie and Fanny, so it helped to fill a few gaps. My mother was thrilled to see the photos and looks forward to seeing more.

  • Hello Sheila, Thankyou for your comment. Miss Jessie Matthews was my Infants School teacher in the 1930’s, and she lived at No. 34 Harpenden Lane, Redbourn with her mother and sister, whose name was unknown to me until your comment pointed out it was Fanny. Jessie was engaged to be married to William Barnes during the First World War, when unfortunately he lost his life. I do have photographs of William and Jessie’s mother, which I will shortly put on the site. Geoff

  • I have been looking for a number of years for any information on Miss Jessie Matthews who was my great aunt and headmistress of Redbourn Infants School. Thank you for publishing this photo. Was the other Miss Matthews, Fanny her sister?
