North Hertfordshire’s First Farmer Christmas Light Tour

Kerrie Portman

In December 2021, North Hertfordshire hosted its first ‘Farmers’ Christmas Light Tour’, though there are talks and hopes of making it an annual event. On December 18th over 100 tractors donned Christmas lights, tinsel and decorations to drive through Baldock, Letchworth and Hitchin. Crowds of 1,000 people came to watch the event.

This was organised by Richard Hill, a farmer from St Ippolyts, who said “every farm in Hertfordshire and Bedfordshire sent a tractor or two.” He also said that his motivation to organise the event was to improve people’s mental health and reflected he’d “not seen one face there not smiling, not happy and not chatting to their mates”. Richard Hill gained the support of local businesses, the National Farmers Union and the council to raise funds for the Garden House Hospice, succeeding in raising £7,000.
