  • Hello, I too am pleased to have found this site. I was born and raised in Letchworth and I lived there from 1949 to 1978. I attended Hillshott Primary and Willian Secondary schools. Some of the names to the comments are still familiar to me, my family still lives in Letchworth.
I’m not really sure if I agree with all of those negative comments on the development of the town. As a child I thought it was a fairly uncomplicated place to grow up in. However, the economical upheavals of the seventies certainly took their toll. When I left in 1978 there were many shops and factories already closed, this made Letchworth look rather sad and run-down. This got worse in the eighties, but there was a significant inprovement thereafter, even if the new buildings aren’t all particularly pleasing to the eye.
In 2016 I visited Letchworth with some friends from Germany. The sun was shining, the flowers in bloom. They couldn’t understand how I had left such a pretty town! I had to explain, how the town suffered under the economical climate of the seventies, and that it didn’t look so pretty when I left.
It seems as if most contributors to the site no longer live in Letchworth, myself included. But I still enjoy going back to the town of my childhood.

  • Hello, I’m very pleased to have discovered your web site. I used to live in Letchworth with my family from 1955/6? – 1967/8? and I have very fond childhood memories of our 13? years living there. At first in Station Road, then Campers Road. But one thing I have noticed about the many nostalgic sites and books now available (not just yours) is that they seem to, for the most part, contain images from the most earliest periods and up to the Second World war and just after. This may be due to many people of a ‘certain age’ yearning for nostalgic pictures from their childhood or earlier? But now as I reach that ‘certain age’ I find myself searching for images from my childhood and in particular from Letchworth in the 60’s, but there seems to be a dearth of pictures from the late 50’s/60’s/70’s? where ever I look. I just hope that thanks to your site some new ‘old’ pictures may turn up. Sadly, I don’t have any either. I suppose it has something to do with the use of the camera which has changed so radically over the years. As I recall a camera only came out if you were on holiday or a family reunion/Christmas? never for random pictures of the area? Despite not having any pictures to submit I still plan to gather my memories and send them over to you which may help unlock other people’s memories of Letchworth in the 60’s? Best regards Laurance
