Traditional Dyes and Paints

Trial and Error

By Joanne Bowes and Jan Drury

Jan and Joanne decided to explore traditional colours, especially those made from plant materials. This was inspired by the Levant Company imports and the Hitchin Priory garden.

But first …. It was necessary to do some research at Hitchin Priory so we had to take Afternoon Tea!

To start we have used leftover natural dyes such as Madder, Onion Skins and Walnut Leaves, and added egg white and other ingredients. As a starting point we have seen some success but need to do more experimentation in order to create a more concentrated liquid.

More sampling to come over the next few weeks.
