St Michael's Church of England School building collapse
Woolmer Green School
By Emma Pearce
At 3.15, the end of the school day, on Thursday 18th of January 2007 bricks and masonry began to fall from the old converted church building at St Michael’s Woolmer Green primary school.
A vigilant parent warned the teachers. Other parents waiting beneath the South facing wall for their children to come out of school were moved to a safe distance before masonry fell onto the car park below.
Following this an engineer visited the site and carried out a full inspection. Repairs were made to the building and the wall was rebuilt. The visibly newer bricks in the south elevation of the building are a reminder of these repairs.
The headteacher Mrs Westley reported to the Welwyn Hatfield Times on 24th January 2007:
“Luckily no-one was injured but the school was closed. The building will be made safe and a full repair scheme is in hand…
Children in oak class will be working in the school hall until full repairs have been carried out.”
