St Albans. Vincent's Charity

Colin Wilson

This organisation is not an almshouse charity in the traditional sense so much as an organisation helping with housing, subsidising the rents. It is linked with the Almshouse Association (according to a list supplied in May 2016) hence has been included in this survey. It is also registered with the Charity Commission ref 2513208.

The charity was set up by Mr Vincent in the 1960s. The trust deed, dated 23rd July 1964 and varied by a scheme of 7th January 1992, states that the purpose is the provision of housing accommodation and financial assistance of needy spinster ladies of the age of 45 years or upwards being residents of St. Albans or having family or other associations therewith. The restriction to spinsters was later removed.

The endowment consisted of 8 investment properties spread across St Albans. The income provides support for 14 dwellings (as at 2019). This simply gives an indication of the scale of the operation.
